This new Photoshop feature can boost image resolution in just one click, thanks to AI

Adobe Photoshop is a powerful photo-editing tool; however, learning how to use it can be daunting at first. As a result, Adobe has been sprinkling in AI features that make it easier to do more with a single click — and today’s drop is no different.

On Tuesday, Adobe launched two new generative AI features in beta, powered by Adobe Firefly: Harmonize and Generative Upscale. Even if you are not a creative professional or marketer who uses Photoshop every day as a cornerstone of their workflow, if you have ever taken or kept a photo, you’ll likely be able to benefit from at least one of the new features — coming from someone who saw the demos and can’t wait to try one of them for myself.

Generative Upscale

The Generative Upscale feature boosts an image’s resolution up to eight megapixels without compromising clarity. 

So, for example, you can upload an image in which the details are fuzzy, whether due to wear and tear on a physical image over the years or an image you took that you wish you could have taken in higher-quality resolution, and have it enhanced without sacrificing the image’s details – a trade-off that often happens when upscaling an image using traditional methods that stretch the existing pixels.

I had access to a live demo of Generative Upscale, which was used to upgrade an old black-and-white family image that had some details missing due to the wear and tear of being a physical image that had lasted throughout the years. By simply tapping the button, the image not only had higher pixels, but the tool also made some of the details crisper. Personally, I am excited to try using the feature on images I have of my grandparents that could use some TLC. 

In the future, Adobe shares that it plans on adding features that enhance the actual details of the image.

Many people rely on Photoshop to combine images to create a composite. While this process is a key part of marketers, photographers, and other creative professionals’ workflows, getting the lighting and bleeding just right can be challenging. Harmonize seeks to tackle that issue.

With Harmonize, Photoshop desktop, web, and early access on iOS can automatically adjust an image’s elements like color, lighting, shadows, and tone to make the composite result more seamless. For example, in my demo, an image of two children running on the beach was then overlaid with another picture of a third child running. Although the pictures were taken in different lighting, when using the Harmonize feature, the image looked seamless.

The Remove Tool is a really helpful tool for removing an element from the image with a swipe. Now the feature has been improved to be more accurate, not only removing the objects, but also more accurately filling in what was left behind.

A new Projects beta is also launching in Photoshop desktop. It’s meant to help people have one space in which they can store all of their assets for easy access and organization. Adobe said it helps the sharing process, as users can share entire collections at once. 

Lastly, Adobe introduced the GenAI Model Picker within Photoshop, which, when using the viral Generative Fill and Generative Expand tools, will display the different Firefly Image Models for added user control.
