Is Google down? Users reporting sporadic outages

Coronavirus here, fear there, and now Google is having fits. We’ve had better days.

At first, Google didn’t  say anything about the problem either on Twitter or the G Suite Status Dashboard,. After noon Eastern, Google’s Dashboard was updated to report trouble with most Google services In the meantime, numerous users had reported trouble with the entire Google services family including Google search. You know things are bad when you can’t Google Google status page.

In particular, there are numerous credible reports that Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drives, and Hangouts are all failing. These services are working sporadically, and failing with a variety of 500 error messages.

You may have worried it was because Google was overloaded by coronavirus-driven home internet traffic. That was not the case. Urs Hölzle, Technical Infrastructure at Google Cloud Senior Vice President, said, “We’re very sorry about that! We had a router failure in Atlanta, which affected traffic routed through that region. Things should be back to normal now. Just to make sure: this wasn’t related to traffic levels or any kind of overload, our network is not stressed by Covid-19.”
