5 most beautiful Linux distributions: ‘Equal parts user-friendly and eye candy’

I’ve used just about every type of Linux desktop imaginable. Over the years, one of the things that has most impressed me is the ability of Linux distribution developers to reinvent the wheel in ways that make the open-source operating system more efficient and more aesthetically pleasing at the same time. There’s no limit to the creativity found in the open-source development world — and the beauty of the Linux desktop is proof of that.

Beauty, as we know, is in the eye of the beholder. You might think Windows 11 or MacOS Sonoma is the most elegant desktop on the market — and that’s great. For me, however, you cannot beat some of today’s Linux desktops for performance, reliability, simplicity —  and beauty!

To that end (and after much deliberation), I’ve come up with the five current distributions that — to this beholder — are the most beautifully designed. Whether or not you agree with my choices, it’s hard to dispute the amazing work these developers have put into creating operating systems that are equal parts user-friendly and eye candy.

Let’s get to the list.

1. Elementary OS

I’ve been a fan of elementary OS for a long time. What I like the most about this distribution is how well it’s designed from top to bottom. It’s like putting on the perfect outfit and all your accessories automatically match. Every element of elementary OS fits. No matter what app you’re using, you know you’re using it on elementary OS and that’s to be commended.

Elementary OS is quite reminiscent of the MacOS desktop, with a dock and top-bar layout. And although elementary OS might not be nearly as customizable as some other distributions, there’s little room to improve on the default layout. On top of that, the lack of customization means it’s an ideal distribution for new users. Because elementary OS is based on Ubuntu, it enjoys Ubuntu’s stability and ease of software installation.

2. Zorin OS

The developers of Zorin OS take their aesthetics seriously and it shows. Like a peacock flashing its feathers, this desktop distribution isn’t afraid to flaunt its flexibility. Upon installation, you get to choose between four very different layouts  — layouts resembling Windows 11, Plasma, GNOME, and even Xfce. You can purchase the Pro edition and get even more layouts. Zorin OS uses just the right amount of transparency and even includes a Jelly Mode (for a nice wobbly window effect).

Also: Zorin OS is exactly what a desktop operating system should be

The ability to switch easily among layouts (with the Zorin Appearance app) means users can migrate from any desktop operating system and feel right at home. Zorin OS does just about everything a desktop operating system can.

3. Ubuntu Budgie

I have a soft spot in my heart for Ubuntu Budgie. It’s the only distribution that managed to knock – even temporarily – Pop!_OS from my desktop. It’s beautiful, easy to use, and adds just enough sass to remind you that you’re not using GNOME or Plasma. Ubuntu Budgie is so well done that I once called it the perfect intro to Linux – and still believe that.

But beyond being such a great distribution for those unfamiliar with Linux, Ubuntu Budgie offers a MacOS-like layout with a flare Apple doesn’t seem to realize it’s missing. For example, the transparent top bar beautifully blends into the background, while still making it apparent that it’s there and ready to serve. Ubuntu Budgie is the perfect blend of just about every Linux desktop on the market and it shows.

4. Garuda Linux (Dragonized edition)

The best way to describe Garuda Linux (Dragonized edition) is that it’s so much cooler than any other desktop operating system on the market — especially if you have a penchant for dark themes with a splash of neon. If Garuda were a high school student, it would be the one everyone would either want to know or be. It’s both rebel and class president and makes everyone else look and feel ordinary.

This version of Garuda uses a highly customized Plasma desktop to deliver a look and feel that never fails to blow me away. You cannot dislike Garuda because if you even try, it’ll make you look bad doing so.

Yeah, it’s that cool.

It doesn’t get much cooler than this.

5. KDE Neon

KDE Neon is all class, with a twist of fun. It’s beautiful, simple, and makes a statement. Every time I fire up a KDE Neon virtual machine and log into the desktop, it makes me smile. When KDE Neon shows up to the prom, everyone can’t help but look at how it’s taken something sweet and simple to make it worthy of the title king or queen.

Also: KDE Neon shows that the Plasma 6 Linux distro is something truly special

There’s nothing to dislike about KDE Neon. Even though the interface is the same old, same old, the developers have managed to make it look fresh. It also helps that the wallpapers they’ve included are just magical.

Any one of these Linux desktop distributions would be a worthy successor to whatever you currently use and will make your friends and family wish they were as cool as you.
