Most of the time I run with bone conduction headsets, but open-ear headphones are also good for keeping your ears open to the environment around you. Recently, I’ve been running, walking, and biking with the new Acefast AceFit Pro<!–> open-ear headphones, and on top of sounding great, they add another layer of safety to your outdoor workout: they light up.

These colorful headphones are available in green, gray, pink, and purple, and light up in your ears to make you more visible to cars and other pedestrians at night. If you’re someone who likes to hit the pavement at night but lighting can be hit or miss, these buds are worth a look.
They’re comfortable, too, weighing just 7.6 grams and featuring a slim earhook design. Audio is good, with crisp, clear sound and good bass. Volume is also louder than I’ve experienced on other open ear headsets so that’s great for gym workouts with lots of background noise.
The headphones have IP54 water resistance, so you can workout in the rain and sweat without worrying about the headset failing. I’ve also worn them during very active sessions, and the comfortable silicone-wrapped titanium alloy earhook stayed securely in place the whole time.
The battery charging case is just over an inch thick, but it’s made of a very glossy material and easily slides off tables. The finish makes it easy to slip into your pocket, but be careful setting it down at the gym. Unfortunately, the USB-C charging port is on the bottom of the case, which is a bit awkward for charging.

There is a LED light on the top cover of the case that lights up when charging in a customized color. The charging level of each earbud is shown on the top of the headset charging case. Acefast advertises up to 30 hours of battery life with the charging case and charging for just 10 minutes provides up to two hours of audio playback. In my testing, I found this to be accurate.

The Acefast app lets you change the colors on the case, but the LED on the earbuds themselves can only be white, unfortunately. Luckily, the lights are quite bright, making you very visible to cars, cyclists, and other pedestrians at night.
Each Acefast AceFit Pro earbud has touch sensitive areas on the outside of the headset with tap, double tap, triple tap, and long press options that you customize in the app. I found that these functions worked easily to control the volume, access the voice assistant on the phone, and manage calls.
ZDNET’s buying advice
If I’m not using bone conduction headphones for running, then open-ear headphones like the Acefast AceFit Pro<!–> are my next option. These headphones are also perfect for those who like wearing a single earbud at a time, since they can be worn independently. The AceFit Pro headset sounds fantastic, has good battery life, is well designed, and affordable at $125.
