  • With a 24-hour battery life and features that encourage speaker syncing, the Ult Field 3 would be perfect for regular hosts and music lovers.

The Sony Ult Field 3<!–> is discounted by $50 during Amazon’s Memorial Day sales event. That is a 26% discount on an impressive and portable speaker.

Picnics in the park, trips to the beach, or clear-skyed tailgates are in our summery future. Once these sunnier days arrive, I’ll want to fill them with music – clear, punchy, and booming music.

Thankfully, Sony’s latest speaker can help me out with that. The audio brand is building on its Ult Power Sound Series, introduced last year, with two new speakers, the Ult Field 3–>, which I tested, and the larger Ult Field 5. I tested out Sony’s smallest Ult speaker, the Ult Field 1, last year and absolutely loved its compact size and clear sound, so I was eager to see how the Ult Field 3 compared.

With a rectangular build, the Ult Field 3 is more than double the size and battery capacity of the Sony Ult Field 1. For added portability, Sony replaces the rope handles with a long, durable strap that transforms the speaker into an accessory — should you choose to wear it on your sunny adventures.

Tote it on your shoulder as you board your boat, hang out at the pool, or on your cabin getaway. It’s a thoughtful and unique touch that is refreshing to see in something as plain as a mid-sized speaker. The Ult Field 3 has three colorways: Black, Forest Gray, and White.

I played several genres of music on the speaker, from my morning classical playlist to some R&B favorites. Where music delivery shines is in bass-forward music, like R&B, pop, and rap. That’s thanks to Sony’s handy Ult button, which amplifies the bass of any song playing on the speaker – I pressed it to bring my songs to life.

It immediately makes subs and mids crisp and creates a heartier sound to my music. I can only imagine how great music could sound playing out of the Ult Field 3 at a booming party.

Sony adds a new feature to its latest lineup of Ult speakers, called Party Connect, which pairs other Ult Field speakers together for ultimate connectivity. Turn on the speaker and press the Party Connect button to instantly connect the devices in various rooms around your place for synchronized sound.

Within the Sony Sound Connect app, users can customize the speaker’s EQ with a seven-band equalizer graph to fine-tune their desired sound.

Sony is known for its stellar sound, and it didn’t skimp on producing enjoyable music with the Ult Field 3. I tested the speaker during one Sunday night dinner with my roommates and was pleased by its effortless ability to produce beautiful and clear ambient sounds as we prepped and ate dinner.

It fills out an apartment space with sound that reaches far beyond a single room — and that’s not even at its highest volume. At max volume, the speaker drowns out conversations within several feet of its playing. With a 24-hour battery life, the Ult Field 3 will surely power your next party or picnic without dying halfway through.

ZDNET’s buying advice

At $200 (and discounted to $148), the Sony Ult Field 3 speaker<!–> is one I’d recommend for music lovers who want to power their next picnic or party with crisp, fantastic music, or enjoy it filling up their space in the comfort of their lonesome. With its bass-boosting capability and the Party Connect feature, which instantly brings together all Ult speakers for synchronized sound, the speaker bodes well for regular hosts. The strap transforms it into a portable powerhouse, making it convenient for trips to the beach, park, or anywhere else.

If $148 is too much to spend on a speaker right now, I’d recommend the bass-forward Beats Pill–>, on sale for $50 right now, instead. But if you’re willing to pay a little more for a speaker (and take advantage of a 20% discount right now), you should try to snatch up the Ult Field 3 during Memorial Day savings. Sony products like these are regularly discounted for Amazon Prime Day and Cyber Week.
