Enter Vision Pro?

Metallica, one of the biggest-selling rock groups of all time, has announced a new immersive concert experience coming to the Apple Vision Pro — and you can preview it for free without owning a headset.

The film, simply titled Metallica, will be released this Friday, March 14 (you’ll find it in the TV app). It was filmed exclusively in Apple Immersive Video during the band’s M72 World Tour stop in Mexico City last fall.

Metallica features three full performances of iconic songs “Whiplash,” “One,” and “Enter Sandman.” Apple says its ultra-high-resolution 180-degree video and spatial audio will give viewers “unprecedented access to James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo — from vantage points as close up as the famed Snake Pit, to wide-angle views of the band’s energetic performance in the round.”

Apple built a custom stage to capture the action, featuring 14 Apple Immersive Video cameras. It used a mix of stabilized cameras, cable-suspended cameras, and remote-controlled camera dolly systems that moved around the stage.

“Game-changing is putting it lightly,” said Metallica’s Lars Ulrich. “Seeing our concert like that, along with the energy of the Mexico City fans — it’s very immersive, and it’s super fun.” Tor Myhren, Apple’s vice president of Marketing Communications, added that the experience lets you “feel like you’re right there: front row, backstage, and even on stage with one of the biggest bands of all time.”

If you don’t own a Vision Pro but still want to check out the concert, Apple says that you can book a free demo of the device and watch an extended preview in an Apple Store.

Apple also announced several other Immersive Video projects, including new episodes of the Adventure and Boundless series, VIP: Yankee Stadium, a film that gives viewers an all-access pass to one of the world’s most iconic baseball venues, and a special episode of Bono: Stories of Surrender that puts you on stage with Bono as he tells stories of his life.
